A number of bodies in the motor industry, including car insurance, have expressed their concerns regarding drink driving in the UK today. For a period of time now, many have felt the current drink drive limit was enough for driving to be safe on the roads. More recently this view has started to change and it is more the case now that the limit should be lowered even further. With the limit being what it currently is, research has shown that drivers still have an increased chance of being in an accident.
Although with the current limit drivers will not be prosecuted for having a drink and being just below the limit, many safety bodies say this is still not good enough as current research suggests being just below the legal limit will not prevent accidents but may still add to them. Currently the legal limit is 80mg but is has been suggested car insurance companies among others, that this be lowered to 50mg to make things as safe as possible. Driving with around 60mg to 80mg of alcohol in the motorists system increases the likelihood of a fatal crash by over 60%.
Research shows that drink driving is probably at its highest since 1992 with around 600 people killed in drink drive related car crashes.
